ABOUT THE AUTHOR
4. What were Lencho’s feelings when the hail stopped?
Lencho’s soul was filled with sadness. The hail storm had affected the corn fields very badly. He lamented that even a plague of locusts would have left more than what was left after the hail storm. Locusts are insects that fly in big swarms and destroy crops.
5. Who or what did Lencho have faith in? What did he do?
Lencho had faith in God. He believed that God would see everything and would help him out. Lencho wrote a letter to God explaining his situation and asked for some money from God.
6. Who read the letter? What did the postmaster do then?
First the postman read the letter and he laughed at the letter. Then he showed it to the postmaster, who also found it amusing but then he thought that something must be done for Lencho and his family. So, the postmaster collected money from the employees, gave a part of his own salary and also asked for help from his friends who contributed as a gesture of charity. He put the money in a letter signed it as ‘God’ and gave the letter to Lencho.
7. Was Lencho surprised to find a letter for him with money in it? What made him angry?
No, Lencho was not surprised to find a letter for him with money in it as he believed that God has sent the money to him in reply to the letter he wrote to God. Lencho got angry when he counted the money that God had sent him. He found that the money amounted to seventy pesos only whereas he had asked for hundred pesos. [Peso is a currency of Latin American country]
8. Lencho has complete faith in God. Explain with inferences from the story.
Lencho had complete faith in God. He believed that God could see everything and would help him out. Lencho wrote a letter to God explaining his situation and asked for some money from God. He did not lament his misfortune, rather he wrote a letter to God and miraculously he received money with the signature ‘God’.
Lencho says “But in the heart of all who lived in that solitary house in the middle of the valley there was a single hope help from God”.
He also says “God could not have made a mistake nor could he have denied Lencho what he had requested”.
9. Why does the post master send money to Lencho? Why does he sign the letter as ‘God’?
The post master sends money to Lencho to keep Lencho’s faith in God alive and firm, as he was completely moved by Lencho’s belief. He collected money from his friends and he contributed some money and signs the letter ‘God’ so that Lencho’s faith does not get shaken.
10. Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him? Why /Why not?
Lencho did not try to find out who has sent the money to him because he never suspected the presence of god and had complete faith in God. He has unquestionable faith in God and believed that he had sent money to him for his problem.
11. Who does Lencho think has taken the rest of the money? What is the irony in the situation? (Remember that the irony of a situation is an unexpected aspect of it. An ironic situation is strange or amusing because it is the opposite of what is expected.)
Lencho thinks that God had sent 100 pesos that he had asked for and the post office employees had taken the rest of the money and gave him remaining 70 pesos. He believes that god cannot make such a mistake so he assumes that they have stolen the money.
The irony of the situation is that Lencho suspected the people who gave him the money and helped him in his problem and tried to keep his faith in God alive. Lencho had unquestionable faith in God but he did not trust humanity. Lencho did not understand the simple fact that God does not directly comes down to help people, god helps people through humans. Trust in humanity is equally important as trust in God.
